Tickets on Sale for ACT Season Opener
For Immediate Release through 9 / 22 / 2013
Tickets are now on sale for the first show in Altoona Community Theatre’s 2013-2014 “From Sweet to Sinister” Season. Neil Simon’s popular comedy “Barefoot in the Park” will kick off ACT’s year with four performances September 19 to 22 on the Benzel Stage of the Historic Mishler Theatre. Corporate Sponsor of the show is Altoona First Savings Bank.
Set in the 1960s in a sixth-floor walk-up apartment in a Greenwich Village brown stone, “Barefoot in the Park” follows a young newly-married couple during that first difficult year of wedded “bliss.” The two are madly in love but polar opposites – Paul’s a stuffed-shirt lawyer embarking on a career and Corie’s a spontaneous free-spirit, wanting to make a cozy lovenest out of their cramped apartment which has no heat, bad plumbing and a hole in the skylight. Add in surprise visits by Corie’s cynical mother and an oddball upstairs neighbor, and the typical Simon-esque laughs roll out over the footlights.
Cast as the young newlyweds are Alyssa Baker of Hollidaysburg as Corrie Bratter and Joshua Phillips of Altoona as Paul. Alyssa most recently played Phylia, the innocent virgin courtesan, in ACT’s May production of “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.” Last November, Joshua tap-danced his way across the Mishler stage as Ghost of Christmas Present in “A Christmas Carol: the Musical.”
Tara E. Enedy of Hollidaysburg, plays Corie’s frumpish mother in need of a sexual re-awakening. This past Spring, Tara represented ACT state-wide and regionally as a bitter, widowed townswoman in ACT’s competition entry “Elephant’s Graveyard.”
Jody Hesley of Hollidaysburg plays Corie’s husband Paul and will be best remembered by ACT audiences as Stanley Kowalsky in “A Streetcar Named Desire.”
George Baumer of State College, who played curmudgeonly Norman Thayer in “On Golden Pond” and a small-minded Sheriff in “Elephant’s Graveyard,” rounds out the cast as a Telephone Repair Man.
Haley Hawk is making her ACT directorial debut with the show, having participated backstage on props crews primarily the last few years and most recently appearing onstage with ACT as rich socialite Kay Ridgeway in “Murder on the Nile.” She also has directed and acted with Things Unseen Theatre Company at The Church in the Middle of the Block.
Curtain time for “Barefoot in the Park” is 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, September 19, 20 and 21 (a new, earlier starting time beginning this season) and 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 22. Tickets range from $13 to $20, depending on location, with discounts available for Students and Active Miliary Members. To charge reservations to MasterCard or Visa, call or visit the Mishler Box Office at (814) 944-9434 between 11:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. weekdays.
