Join a ranger for a free hike on the 6 to 10 Trail at Allegheny Portage Railroad NHS. This 9-mile hike over moderately difficult terrain will take visitors through the most scenic area of the park. Many remains of the Portage Railroad can still be seen and will be shown to the visitor. The hike will last about 5 hours and will be led rain or shine.
.Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site is located 10 miles west of Altoona, Pennsylvania off the Gallitzin exit of U.S. Highway 22. The park preserves portions of the first railroad crossing of the Allegheny Mountains. This unique railroad connected the eastern and western divisions of the PennsylvaniaMainlineCanal.
