ONE DEAD/2 INJURED IN BLAST

THE CAMBRIA COUNTY CORONER HAS CONFIRMED THAT 40-YEAR OLD BRAD KOLLAR OF HASTINGS COMMITTED SUICIDE TUESDAY MORNING RATHER THAN APPEARING FOR SENTENCING ON CHARGES OF OPERATING A METH LAB. KOLLAR HAD BOMBS STRAPPED TO HIS BODY WHEN HE CRASHED HIS TRUCK INTO A HOUSE IN THE 800 BLOCK OF KEPSHIRE ROAD IN CLEARFIELD TOWNSHIP. 44 YEAR OLD BILL SHANER, WHO LIVED IN THE DESTROYED HOUSE, WAS FLOWN TO ALLEGHENY GENERAL HOSPITAL IN PITTSBURGH WHERE HE IS IN CRITICAL CONDITION.  A SECOND, UNIDENTIFIED TEENAGE VICTIM IS IN STABLE CONDITION AT ALTOONA REGIONAL HEALTH SYSTEM. SOURCES TELL WJAC THAT KOLLAR OF HASTINGS BELIEVED THAT SHANER HAD SNITCHED ON HIM, LEADING TO HIS ARREST. STATE TROOPERS WILL HOLD A NEWS CONFERENCE AT 11 THIS MORNING.

LOCAL MARINE KILLED IN ACCIDENT

WTAJ REPORTS THAT 19 YEAR OLD JOSH MARTINO…A 2012 DUBOIS HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE…WAS ONE OF 7 MARINES KILLED MONDAY NIGHT IN NEVADA WHEN A MORTAR EXPLODED AT AN ARMY DEPOT. MARTINO WAS JUST RECENTLY ENGAGED AND WAS HOPING TO COME HOME FOR EASTER IN 2 WEEKS. MARINE CORPS OFFICIALS SAY THEY ARE GETTING RID OF THAT TYPE OF MORTAR ROUNDS AS THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES.

D-U-I ON A BIKE??

A 32 YEAR OLD STATE COLLEGE MAN WAS FOUND GUILTY OF DUI FOR RIDING HIS BIKE INTOXICATED. THE CENTRE DAILY TIMES REPORTS FRANK ARITZ JUNIOR’S BLOOD ALCOHOL WAS POINT-162, MORE THAN DOUBLE THE LEGAL LIMIT. HE WAS STOPPED ON A BIKE PATH ON SOUTH ALLEN STREET IN EARLY FEBRUARY.

MORE CHARGES AGAINST FORMER ASSISTANT FIRE CHIEF

MORE CHARGES HAVE BEEN FILED AGAINST JASON OBER, AN ASSISTANT CHIEF OF THE RICHLAND TOWNSHIP VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT NEAR JOHNSTOWN. HE IS NOW CHARGED WITH STEALING MORE THAN 26-THOUSAND DOLLARS FROM THE FIRE COMPANY. OBER WAIVED HIS PRELIMINARY HEARING YESTERDAY. HE REMAINS FREE ON HIS OWN RECOGNIZANCE.

SELLING VALLEY VIEW NURSING HOME

BLAIR COUNTY COMMISSIONERS VOTED 2 TO 1 YESTERDAY TO ENTER INTO FINAL NEGOTIATIONS TO SELL VALLEY VIEW NURSING HOME TO RELIANT SENIOR CARE MANAGEMENT OF PHILADELPHIA, ONE OF 5 HEALTH CARE COMPANIES THAT SUBMITTED BIDS. THE SALE IS EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETED BEFORE THE END OF JULY. AS OF RIGHT NOW, THE NEGOTIATED BID IS 16-POINT-5 MILLION DOLLARS. COMMISSIONER TERRY TOMASSETTI TELLS WTAJ THAT IS JUST ABOUT ENOUGH TO COVER THE PENSION OBLIGATIONS AND OTHER DEBTS THAT THE COUNTY HAS ACCUMULATED AS THE OPERATOR OF THE NURSING HOME. OFFICIALS EXPECT RELIANT WILL RETAIN MOST OF VALLEY VIEW’S STAFF. ELIANT ALSO AGREED TO EXCLUDE THE NEARBY SOCCER FIELDS FROM THE SALE.  

UNEMPLOYMENT IS UP

BLAIR COUNTY’S UNEMPLOYMENT RATE JUMPED 2-TENTHS OF ONE PERCENT TO STAND AT 7-POINT-5 IN JANUARY. BEDFORD COUNTY WENT FROM 9-POINT-8 TO 10-POINT-6. CLEARFIELD COUNTY INCREASED FROM 9-POINT-3 TO 10-PERCENT. HUNTINGDON COUNTY 9-POINT-7 TO 10-POINT-6. CAMBRIA COUNTY ROSE FROM 8-POINT-9 TO 9-POINT-3. AND CENTRE COUNTY’S RATE CLIMBED 2-TENTHS TO 5-POINT-9. THE STATEWIDE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE INCREASED FROM 7-POINT-9 TO 8-POINT-2. THE NATIONAL NUMBER IS UP ONE-TENTH TO 7-POINT-9.

A NEW REPORT FROM THE ROBERT WOOD JOHNSON FOUNDATION FINDS THAT BLAIR COUNTY IS THE 56TH MOST UNHEALTHY COUNTY IN PENNSYLVANIA. CAMBRIA RANKS 63RD OUT OF 67. THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT CENTRE COUNTY IS NUMBER 4 AND BEDFORD COMES IN AT 20TH. HUNTINGDON COUNTY STANDS AT 26TH AND CLEARFIELD COUNTY IS 38TH. THE STUDY INCLUDES FACTORS SUCH AS SMOKING AND OBESITY AS WELL AS SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC FACTORS. DESPITE OBJECTIONS FROM EMPLOYEES, BLAIR COUNTY COMMISSIONERS VOTED YESTERDAY TO SELL VALLEY VIEW NURSING HOME TO RELIANT SENIOR CARE MANAGEMENT OF PHILADELPHIA FOR 16-POINT-5 MILLION DOLLARS.
