PATERNO PAY-OUT

PENN STATE SAYS IT HAS PROVIDED MORE THAN 5-POINT-5 MILLION DOLLARS IN PAYMENTS AND BENEFITS TO SETTLE JOE PATERNO’S CONTRACT. THOSE BENEFITS INCLUDE A 3 MILLION DOLLAR CAREER BONUS…AN ANNUAL BONUS OF 425-THOUSAND DOLLARS…THE USE BY PATERNO’S FAMILY OF A BEAVER STADIUM SUITE FOR 25 YEARS, VALUED AT 1-POINT-5 MILLION…AND 900-THOUSAND FROM TELEVISION AND RADIO REVENUE FROM LAST SEASON. SUE PATERNO WILL RECEIVE  1-THOUSAND DOLLARS A MONTH FOR LIFE AND THE UNIVERSITY ALSO AGREED TO FORGIVE 350-THOUSAND DOLLARS IN OUTSTANDING LOANS AND DEBT. PATERNO FAMILY LAWYER WICK SOLLERS SAYS THIS IS NOT A SETTLEMENT, BUT A STRAIGHTFORWARD PAYMENT OF MONEYS INDISPUTABLY OWED TO THE PATERNO ESTATE.

PENN STATE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

VOTING FOR 3 ALUMNI SEATS ON PENN STATE’S BOARD OF DIRECTORS IS UNDERWAY UNTIL MAY 3RD AND TURNOUT IS STRONG. ALMOST 20-THOUSAND ALUMNI HAVE CAST BALLOTS SINCE VOTING STARTED APRIL 10TH. 86 CANDIDATES ARE RUNNING. THE PENN STATE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION IS HOSTING A “MEET THE CANDIDATES” EVENT TOMORROW IN THE INTRAMURAL BUILDING FROM 9:30 TO 11:30AM BEFORE THE BLUE-WHITE FOOTBALL GAME. THE EVENT IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

ASSISTANT ATHLETIC DIRECTOR FIRED

THE CENTRE DAILY TIMES REPORTS THAT PENN STATE ASSISTANT ATHLETIC DIRECTOR MARK SHERBURNE HAS BEEN FIRED, BUT THE REASON HAS NOT BEEN ANNOUNCED. SHERBURNE BRIEFLY TOOK OVER THE REINS OF THE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT IN NOVEMBER AFTER TIM CURLEY STEPPED DOWN. ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON DAVE JOYNER IS THE CURRENT ACTING ATHLETIC DIRECTOR.

TYRONE MAN SUES ALTOONA POLICE

THE ALTOONA MIRROR REPORTS THAT MATTHEW MALLORY OF TYRONE IS SUING THE CITY OF ALTOONA AND 9 POLICE OFFICERS IN JOHNSTOWN’S FEDERAL COURT. MALLORY CLAIMS HE WAS BEATEN AND REPEATEDLY TAZED DURING A 2009 DOMESTIC ASSAULT ARREST AND HE SAYS OFFICERS USED UNNECESSARY, UNREASONABLE, AND EXCESSIVE FORCE. MALLORY AND 5 COPS WERE TREATED AT THE HOSPITAL. HE LATER PLEADED GUILTY TO RESISTING ARREST.

ATTEMPTED MURDER TRIAL WRAPPING UP

DANIEL BROOKS OF HOWARD TESTIFIED YESTERDAY DURING THE ATTEMPTED HOMICIDE TRIAL OF HIS SON IN CENTRE COUNTY. RANDALL BROOKS IS ACCUSED OF SHOOTING HIS EX-GIRLFRIEND’S NEW BOYFRIEND IN A 2009 DRIVE BY. POLICE SAY RANDALL INVOLVED HIS FATHER IN A PLOT TO TRY AND CONTACT AND INFLUENCE A JUROR LAST SUMMER. DANIEL BROOKS IS CHARGED WITH JURY TAMPERING, BUT IS COOPERATING WITH AUTHORITIES. TESTIMONY IS EXPECTED TO WRAP UP TODAY. 

ALTOONA DRUG BUST

24 YEAR OLD SETH SUNSERI AND 24 YEAR OLD NICOLE STEVENS OF ALTOONA ARE IN THE BLAIR COUNTY PRISON FOLLOWING A DRUG BUST THIS WEEK. STATE POLICE SAY VICE COPS MADE 4 CONTROLLED BUYS OF HEROIN FROM THE COUPLE EARLIER THIS MONTH. WHEN THEIR 4TH AVENUE RESIDENCE AND ANOTHER LOCATION WERE SEARCHED, POLICE FOUND 161 PILLS AND OVER 23-HUNDRED DOLLARS CASH.

MORE BOMB THREATS AT PITT

UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH IS STILL RECEIVING BOMB THREATS, WITH 6 MORE REPORTED YESTERDAY. THE THREATS BEGAN A LITTLE OVER 2 MONTHS AGO AND DOZENS HAVE COME IN SINCE THEN. NO BOMBS HAVE BEEN FOUND AND NO ONE HAS BEEN INJURED. AUTHORITIES SAY SOME STUDENTS ARE ORGANIZING A CAMPAIGN TO CONTACT ELECTED OFFICIALS AND SEEK MORE HELP ON THE CASE.

SCHOOL EVACUATED

STUDENTS WERE EVACUATED YESTERDAY AND LATER SENT HOME AFTER A BOMB THREAT WAS FOUND IN A BATHROOM AT WEST BRANCH JUNIOR-SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN MORRIS TOWNSHIP, CLEARFIELD COUNTY. STATE POLICE SAY NO EXPLOSIVES WERE FOUND. CLASSES WILL RESUME TODAY.

BLUE-WHITE WEEKEND

IT’S BLUE-WHITE WEEKEND AT PENN STATE AND THAT MEANS PARKING CHANGES AROUND BEAVER STADIUM. THE CARNIVAL IS SET UP IN THE STADIUM WEST SECTION AND THAT PARKING LOT IS CLOSED THROUGH 5PM SUNDAY. A-D-A PARKING WILL BE IN THE SOUTH LOT NEAREST TO CURTAIN ROAD AND THE MEDLAR FIELD PARKING LOT NEAREST TO PORTER ROAD. THE OVERNIGHT R-V LOTS OPEN AT 8AM TODAY AND WILL CLOSE SATURDAY AT 4AM. WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE R-V LOTS, PARKING FOR SATURDAY’S GAME IS FREE AND FANS CAN PRE-PRINT A PARKING PASS AT GO-P-S-U-SPORTS-DOT-COM. THE BLUE-WHITE GAME KICKS OFF AT 2. ADMISSION IS FREE.
