SOME ALUMNI BOARD MEMBERS HAVE FILED A NOTICE OF APPEAL SAYING ERICKSON OVER-STEPPED HIS AUTHORITY. FATAL WRECKS

2 CENTRE COUNTY DRIVERS DIED AND A 4-YEAR-OLD GIRL WAS FLOWN TO THE HOSPITAL AFTER A HEAD-ON COLLISION THURSDAY AFTERNOON ON I-99 NEAR THE SHILOH ROAD EXIT. STATE POLICE SAY DAVID WILLIAMS OF STATE COLLEGE LOST CONTROL OF HIS PICK UP FOR UNKNOWN REASONS AND TRAVELED ACROSS THE GRASS MEDIAN. HE STRUCK A SEDAN DRIVEN BY SARAH JOHNSON, CAUSING BOTH VEHICLES TO FLIP SEVERAL TIMES. THE GIRL RIDING IN JOHNSON’S CAR SUFFERED MODERATE INJURIES.

A FATAL MOTORCYCLE CRASH ABOUT 6 YESTERDAY MORNING IN CENTRE COUNTY. STATE POLICE SAY ARMY SERGEANT AND IRAQ WAR VETERAN DEMARCUS LOCKLEAR OF NORTH CAROLINA WAS SOUTHBOUND ON SOUTH EAGLE VALLEY ROAD IN UNION TOWNSHIP WHEN HE BEGAN TO PASS ANOTHER VEHICLE. HIS BIKE COLLIDED WITH THE FRONT END OF A NORTHBOUND PICKUP DRIVEN BY BARRY WALK OF JULIAN. LOCKLEAR WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD AT THE SCENE.

A SECOND ARREST IN JOHNSTOWN CABBIE SHOOTING

JOHNSTOWN POLICE SAY A SECOND MAN IS NOW IN CUSTODY, CHARGED WITH THE ROBBERY AND SHOOTING OF A CAB DRIVER ON MONDAY. 22 YEAR OLD JOSEPH THORNTON, WHO IS HOMELESS, IS BEHIND BARS ALONG WITH 24 YEAR OLD MATTHEW GREENE. GREENE TOLD POLICE HE NEEDED THE MONEY TO BUY BREAKFAST FOR HIS DAUGHTER. AUTHORITIES ARE STILL LOOKING FOR A 3RD SUSPECT. THE TAXI DRIVER IS IN FAIR CONDITION AT MEMORIAL MEDICAL CENTER.

SAVING HIGHLAND HALL?

THE ALTOONA MIRROR REPORTS THAT A TASK FORCE IS BEING FORMED IN AN ATTEMPT TO SAVE HIGHLAND HALL IN HOLLIDAYSBURG. BACK IN JUNE, DEVELOPER RALPH ALBARANO SENT A LETTER TO THE BORO ASKING FOR THE OPTION TO RAZE THE 140 YEAR OLD BUILDING WHICH HAS BEEN EMPTY FOR MANY YEARS. ALBARANO SAYS IT WOULD BE WAY TOO EXPENSIVE TO RENOVATE THE DILAPIDATED PROPERTY.

PENNDOT FUNDING

PENNDOT YESTERDAY APPROVED AN UPDATE TO PENNSYLVANIA’S 12-YEAR TRANSPORTATION PROGRAM. IT ANTICIPATES 41-POINT-6 BILLION DOLLARS BEING AVAILABLE OVER THAT TIME PERIOD FOR IMPROVEMENTS TO ROADS, BRIDGES, TRANSIT SYSTEMS, AIRPORTS AND RAILROADS. SECRETARY BARRY SCHOCH SAYS THE PLAN FOCUSES ON PRESERVING OUR CURRENT INFRASTRUCTURE WHILE LIVING WITH THE REALITY OF FLAT OR REDUCED FEDERAL AND STATE REVENUES. A LITTLE OVER 9 BILLION IS FORECAST TO BE AVAILABLE FOR ROADS AND BRIDGES ALONE IN THE FIRST 4 YEARS.

ROADKILL PAINTED OVER

A PHOTO TAKEN IN JOHNSTOWN IS GETTING NATIONWIDE ATTENTION. ROAD CREWS PAINTED DOUBLE YELLOW LINES OVER A DEAD RACCOON IN THE MIDDLE OF FRANKLIN STREET. A PENNDOT SPOKESMAN SAYS THE INCIDENT, WHILE EMBARRASSING, WAS UNAVOIDABLE. HE SAYS THE CREWS TRIED TO STOP THE PAINT GUN, BUT THE ROAD WAS CONGESTED AND BECAUSE OF THE GEOMETRY OF THE ROAD AND THE SIZE OF EQUIPMENT, THEY COULDN’T TURN AROUND TO GO BACK AND FIX THE MISTAKE. THE ROADKILL HAS BEEN CLEANED UP AND RE-PAINTING WILL BE DONE SOON.
