DEADLY MENINGITIS OUTBREAK

NO ILLNESSES HAVE BEEN REPORTED IN PENNSYLVLANIA, BUT THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION IS EXPECTING MORE MENINGITIS CASES AS PART OF A RARE NATIONAL OUTBREAK. SO FAR, 5 PEOPLE HAVE DIED, WITH 3 DOZEN CASES REPORTED IN 23 STATES. THE MENINGITIS HAS BEEN TRACED TO A SEALED VIAL AT A MASSACHUSETTS SPECIALTY PHARMACY.  ALLEGHENY PAIN MANAGEMENT IN ALTOONA RECEIVED SOME OF THE MEDICATION, BUT IS NO LONGER USING IT. ALL OF THOSE WHO RECEIVED THE INJECTION GOT IT BECAUSE OF BACK PAIN.  

HOUSE EXPLODES

A 44 YEAR OLD PHILIPSBURG WOMAN IS IN STABLE CONDITION AT A PITTSBURGH HOSPITAL AFTER HER PINE STREET HOUSE EXPLODED THURSDAY AFTERNOON. NEIGHBORS SAY THEY HEARD A BANG, THEN A HUGE FIRE BROKE OUT AND ALSO CAUSED MINOR DAMAGE TO 2 ADJACENT HOMES. THE VICTIM SUFFERED SECOND DEGREE BURNS AND SMOKE INHALATION. THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES.

POLICE SHOOTING

45 YEAR OLD KEVIN MCGEE OF JOHNSTOWN HAS BEEN TRANSFERRED FROM THE HOSPITAL TO THE CAMBRIA COUNTY PRISON. RICHLAND TOWNSHIP POLICE OFFICERS SHOT HIM IN THE ABDOMEN SEPTEMBER 13TH AFTER HE FIRED A SHOTGUN INTO THE BACK WINDOW OF A PARKED POLICE CRUISER OUTSIDE THE MUNICIPAL BUILDING. MCGEE THEN POINTED AT THE COPS AND REFUSED TO PUT HIS GUN DOWN. CHARGES INCLUDE ATTEMPTED HOMICIDE.

SANDUSKY SCANDAL

JERRY SANDUSKY IS SCHEDULED FOR SENTENCING TUESDAY AND WILL LIKELY SPEND THE REST OF HIS LIFE BEHIND BARS. YESTERDAY, JUDGE JOHN CLELAND AGREED TO RETURN 50-THOUSAND DOLLARS IN BAIL MONEY TO SANDUSKY'S WIFE, DOTTIE. SHE ALSO POSTED 200-THOUSAND DOLLARS IN COLLATERAL FROM THEIR COLLEGE TOWNSHIP HOME IN DECEMBER, WHICH ALLOWED HER HUSBAND TO BE RELEASED FROM THE COUNTY JAIL AFTER HIS PRELIMINARY HEARING.

CHILD RAPE CASES

LAST MONTH, THE STATE SUPREME COURT OVERTURNED BLAIR COUNTY JUDGE ELIZABETH DOYLE’S LIFE SENTENCE FOR SERIAL CHILD RAPIST DAVID HELSEL…AND THE ALTOONA MIRROR REPORTS THAT DOYLE YESTERDAY RE-SENTENCED THE 32 YEAR OLD ALTOONA MAN TO 75 TO 150 YEARS IN PRISON. IN JUNE OF 2009, HE TOOK 2 GIRLS FROM THE OAK RIDGE CEMETERY, THREATENED THEM WITH A KNIFE, AND TRIED TO RAPE ONE OF THEM. HELSEL RAPED 2 OTHER GIRLS IN THE 1990’S AND HE WAS SENTENCED TO LIFE UNDER THE 3 STRIKES RULE…BUT THE HIGH COURT RULED THAT FOR SENTENCING PURPOSES THERE WAS ONLY ONE PREVIOUS CONVICTION.

STATE POLICE IN HUNTINGDON COUNTY SAY 47 YEAR OLD ROBERT HENNEY OF HUNTINGDON IS IN THE COUNTY JAIL CHARGED WITH SEXUALLY-ABUSING HIS YOUNG STEP-DAUGHTER OVER SEVERAL YEARS, STARTING WHEN SHE WAS IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. HENNEY ADMITTED TO THE ALLEGATIONS BUT SAID HE NEVER FORCED HIMSELF ON THE GIRL. BAIL IS SET AT 50-THOUSAND DOLLARS CASH.

JURY SELECTION WAS TO BEGIN YESTERDAY FOR THE CAMBRIA COUNTY TRIAL OF 23 YEAR OLD LEE KEARNS OF JOHNSTOWN, BUT HE DECIDED HE WANTS A NON-JURY TRIAL AND A JUDGE TO DECIDE HIS FATE. KEARNS IS ACCUSED OF SEXUALLY ABUSING A 5-YEAR-OLD GIRL TWICE IN THE SPRING OF 2011 AT A HOME IN STONYCREEK TOWNSHIP. THE TRIAL OPENS WEDNESDAY BEFORE JUDGE NORMAN KRUMENACKER.

CANOE CREEK LAKE LOWERED

CANOE LAKE AT CANOE CREEK STATE PARK IS BEING LOWERED BY ABOUT 5 FEET DUE TO CONSTRUCTION PURPOSES. THE DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION AND NATURAL RESOURCES SAYS THE PARTIAL DRAINAGE WILL REMAIN IN EFFECT UNTIL MID-MARCH.
