5 YEAR OLD & MOTORCYCLIST KILLED

STATE POLICE IN BEDFORD SAY A 5-YEAR-OLD BOY FROM HAGERSTOWN MARYLAND WAS KILLED EARLY SUNDAY MORNING WHEN THE MINI-VAN HE WAS RIDING IN WAS HIT BY A CAR ALONG BUSINESS ROUTE 220 IN BEDFORD TOWNSHIP. THE OTHER DRIVER, 23-YEAR-OLD CORY CHILDERS OF BEDFORD, IS IN CRITICAL CONDITION AT ALTOONA REGIONAL TRAUMA CENTER AND HE COULD FACE DRUNK DRIVING CHARGES. THE MINI-VAN DRIVER, 52 YEAR OLD RORY JENKINS, HAD MAJOR INJURIES…AND A 2-YEAR-OLD IN JENKINS’ VEHICLE SUFFERED MODERATE INJURIES.  

POLICE IN FREEDOM TOWNSHIP, BLAIR COUNTY, ARE STILL INVESTIGATING A FATAL MOTORCYCLE CRASH THAT HAPPENED JUST AFTER 10:30 FRIDAY NIGHT.
AUTHORITIES SAY 32 YEAR OLD PHILLIP BOTTENFIELD WAS RIDING ON MOYER ROAD WHEN AN S-U-V CUT HIM OFF. THE S-U-V DRIVER, 53 YEAR OLD JOHN MCANDREW OF DUNCANSVILLE, TOLD POLICE HE WAS TURNING LEFT FROM KNOB ROAD ONTO MOYER ROAD AND HE DIDN’T SEE THE MOTORCYCLE COMING. BOTTENFIELD WAS WEARING A HELMET.

JOHNSTOWN MURDER/SUICIDE

JOHNSTOWN POLICE HANDLED A MURDER-SUICIDE ON SATURDAY. CORONER DENNIS KWIATKOWSKI SAYS 40 YEAR OLD DEMONT MORRIS SHOT HIS ESTRANGED WIFE, 38 YEAR OLD ROYALE MORRIS, IN THE CHEST…THEN SHOT HIMSELF IN THE HEAD. IT HAPPENED AT THE OAKHURST HOMES. THIS SPRING, MORRIS WAS RELEASED AFTER SERVING 3 YEARS IN A FEDERAL PRISON.

FIRES

A LAKEMONT FAMILY IS HOMELESS AFTER A FIRE SATURDAY EVENING. AUTHORITIES SAY A CAT DIED WHEN THE FLAMES BROKE OUT AT THE HOME OF JOHN DODSON ON THE 500 BLOCK OF GAGE STREET. FIRE CREWS THINK IT STARTED IN THE KITCHEN.

DAMAGE IS ESTIMATED AT 300 TO 500-THOUSAND DOLLARS AFTER A BARN WENT UP IN FLAMES EARLY SUNDAY MORNING AT FAIRMAN FARMS IN DUBOIS. AT LEAST 5 TRACTORS WERE INSIDE THE BUILDING, BUT THE ANIMALS WERE ALL IN A BIGGER BARN BEHIND IT AND FIRE CREWS WERE ABLE TO KEEP THE FLAMES FROM SPREADING. A STATE POLICE FIRE MARSHAL IS INVESTIGATING.

THE RED CROSS IS ASSISTING 2 PEOPLE WHO LOST THEIR MOBILE HOME IN A FIRE SUNDAY AFTERNOON. THE BLAZE BROKE OUT JUST BEFORE 2PM ON THE 25-HUNDRED BLOCK OF PLANK ROAD IN HOPEWELL, BEDFORD COUNTY. THE RESIDENTS WERE NOT HOME WHEN THE FIRE STARTED AND THE CAUSE IS STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION.

MAN JAILED IN HAMMER ASSAULT

27 YEAR OLD ERIC YARRISON OF CURTIN TOWNSHIP IS IN THE CENTRE COUNTY PRISON AFTER POLICE CHARGED HIM WITH ASSAULTING ANOTHER MAN WITH A HAMMER SATURDAY NIGHT. YARRISON ALSO ALLEGEDLY PUT A SMOKING NAPKIN IN THE GAS FILLER CAP OF THE MAN’S S-U-V, THREATENED TO KILL HIM, AND FIRED A GUN AT HIM BEFORE RUNNING OFF. BAIL IS SET AT 150-THOUSAND DOLLARS AND CHARGED INCLUDE FELONY AGGRAVATED ASSAULT AND ARSON.

LASCH BUILDING TAINTED

IN AN INTERVIEW WITH THE ALTOONA MIRROR, CONNIE SMUKLER, THE DAUGHTER OF LOUIS AND MILDRED LASCH, SAID THE PENN STATE BUILDING NAMED FOR HER LATE PARENTS HAS “LOST ITS PRISTINE” AS A RESULT OF THE JERRY SANDUSKY SCANDAL AND SHE ISN’T CERTAIN IF IT WILL COME BACK. THE LASCH’S HELPED ESTABLISH PENN STATE’S BOOSTER CLUB IN 1959 AND ALSO DONATED 1-POINT-7 MILLION DOLLARS FOLLOWING LOUIS’ DEATH IN 1995, TOWARD CONSTRUCTION OF THE FACILITY WHERE SANDUSKY ALLEGEDLY MOLESTED SEVERAL YOUNG BOYS.
