STORM CLEANUP CONTINUES

ONLY A COUPLE OF BLAIR COUNTY CUSTOMERS ARE STILL WITHOUT ELECTRICITY FOLLOWING SATURDAY’S STORMS. PENELEC SAYS THERE WERE ABOUT 45-HUNDRED WITHOUT POWER AT THE HEIGHT OF THE PROBLEM. DAMAGE WAS WORST IN HOLLIDAYSBURG, LAKEMONT, AND THE ELDORADO AND IVYSIDE SECTIONS OF ALTOONA. ABOUT 25 TREES WERE KNOCKED DOWN AT THE PARK HILLS COUNTRY CLUB AND THE GOLF COURSE REMAINS CLOSED TODAY WHILE CLEAN-UP CONTINUES. PENNSYLVANIA SAW SOME RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURES OVER THE WEEKEND, BUT IT WILL BE COOLER STARTING TODAY. NATIONWIDE, AT LEAST 30 DEATHS WERE BLAMED ON THE RECENT HEATWAVE, 3 OF THEM IN OUR STATE.

STABBING IN BELLWOOD

AN ALTOONA MAN IS IN CRITICAL CONDITION FOLLOWING A STABBING SUNDAY EVENING IN THE PARKING LOT OF THE FRATERNAL ORDER OF EAGLES IN BELLWOOD. SCOTT MILLER, ONE OF THE TRUSTEE/MANAGERS OF THE PRIVATE CLUB AND BAR, TELLS THE ALTOONA MIRROR THAT JOE YOUNG WAS STABBED IN THE ABDOMEN BY A CLUB MEMBER AFTER YOUNG PUNCHED HIM IN THE HEAD WITHOUT PROVOCATION. THIS HAPPENED AFTER YOUNG ARGUED WITH ANOTHER MAN INSIDE THE CLUB AND WAS ESCORTED OUT. YOUNG IS NOT AN ELKS CLUB MEMBER, BUT WAS THERE AS A GUEST.

SKYDIVER KILLED

A STATE COLLEGE MAN IS DEAD AFTER A SKYDIVING ACCIDENT. THE CORONER’S OFFICE SAYS 53 YEAR OLD CHRIS BROWN WAS JUMPING WITH 2 OTHER MEMBERS OF SKY DIVE HAPPY VALLEY NEAR THE MIFFLIN COUNTY AIRPORT AROUND 10 SATURDAY MORNING WHEN HIS MAIN CHUTE OPENED, BUT GOT TANGLED UP. THEN HIS EMERGENCY CHUTE FAILED TO OPEN AND HE FELL FROM ABOUT 4-THOUSAND FEET. BROWN WAS AN EXPERIENCED SKYDIVER. THE ACCIDENT IS STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION.

DROWNING IN CLEARFIELD COUNTY POND

A HOLIDAY WEEKEND DROWNING IN CLEARFIELD COUNTY. POLICE SAY 19 YEAR OLD DYLAN KEITH OF HOUTZDALE WAS SWIMMING IN THE POND AT CAMP WOPSONONOCK IN GULICH TOWNSHIP SATURDAY AFTERNOON. AUTHORITIES AREN’T SURE WHY HE WENT UNDER. RESCUE DIVERS PULLED KEITH FROM THE WATER AND HE WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD AT THE SCENE. THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES.

PROTESTORS ARRESTED

PROTESTERS DEMONSTRATING AGAINST HYDRAULIC FRACTURING AT THE MOSHANNON STATE FOREST IN CLEARFIELD COUNTY LED TO A NEW GAS DRILLING RIG TEMPORARILY BEING SHUT DOWN YESTERDAY. ABOUT 150 DEMONSTRATORS BLOCKED AN ACCESS ROAD FOR TRUCKS HEADED TO A NEW E-Q-T CORPORATION RIG. POLICE REPORTEDLY ARRESTED 3 PROTESTORS.

D-U-I CHECKPOINT

THE BLAIR COUNTY D-U-I TASKFORCE SET UP A CHECKPOINT ON ROUTE 36 IN HOLLIDAYSBURG FROM FRIDAY NIGHT INTO SATURDAY MORNING. POLICE STOPPED MORE THAN 400 CARS. THEY ARRESTED ONE PERSON FOR DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE. COPS ALSO HANDED OUT 54 WARNINGS OR CITATIONS.

FIREWORKS SEIZED

THE ALTOONA POLICE DEPARTMENT PUT EXTRA OFFICERS ON THE STREETS AS PART OF A SPECIAL FIREWORKS PATROL JULY 3RD AND 4TH. THE 9 OFFICERS ADDRESSED 81 COMPLAINTS OF FIREWORKS…MADE 20 ARRESTS…AND CONFISCATED HUNDREDS OF ILLEGAL FIREWORKS, SOME PROFESSIONAL GRADE. POLICE SAY THE FIREWORKS WERE PROPERLY DISPOSED OF.
