AREA FIRES

FIRE DESTROYED 2 HOMES AT 301 AND 303 LEXINGTON AVENUE IN ALTOONA ABOUT 8:30 LAST NIGHT. RAYMOND RONK, MELISSA BENSON, AND THEIR 3 CHILDREN…INCLUDING A 2 WEEK OLD BABY…WERE AT A PICNIC JUST A BLOCK DOWN THE STREET WHEN THEY HEARD A BIG BANG AND REALIZED THEIR HOUSE WAS ON FIRE. A WOMAN ESCAPED FROM THE OTHER HOME…AND ONE FIREFIGHTER IS HOSPITALIZED IN STABLE CONDITION WITH HEAT EXHAUSTION. THE ALTOONA FIRE MARSHAL IS INVESTIGATING THE CAUSE.

ANOTHER FIRE DESTROYED A COMMERCIAL STRUCTURE THAT WAS STORING ANTIQUES AT 18TH STREET AND 13TH AVENUE.

SEVERAL STATE COLLEGE RESIDENTS WILL BE UNABLE TO LIVE IN THEIR APARTMENTS FOR A FEW DAYS AFTER AN ELECTRICAL FIRE IN A TOFTREES APARTMENT SUNDAY MORNING. AUTHORITIES SAY RESIDENTS OF THE APARTMENT OFF TOFTREES AVENUE WERE EVACUATED FROM THE BUILDING AROUND 10AM. THE BLAZE STARTED IN THE BASEMENT AND INVOLVED SEVERAL ELECTRICAL POWER LINES. THE APARTMENTS SUSTAINED SMOKE DAMAGE.

STATE COLLEGE POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING A FIRE THAT BROKE OUT AT A BUILDING ON WEST COLLEGE AVENUE A LITTLE AFTER 3 SATURDAY MORNING.
NO ONE WAS INSIDE AT THE TIME AND NO ONE WAS HURT. ROADS IN THE AREA WERE CLOSED FOR ABOUT 2 HOURS.

DEADLY DIRTBIKE WRECK

40 YEAR OLD BRIAN STACEY OF ALTOONA DIED SATURDAY NIGHT WHEN HIS DIRT BIKE COLLIDED WITH A CAR DRIVEN BY JOHN EBERSOLE. IT HAPPENED ALONG HOMERS GAP ROAD IN LOGAN TOWNSHIP, BLAIR COUNTY. POLICE ARE STILL INVESTIGATING THE CRASH AND HAVE NOT FILED ANY CHARGES YET.

MAN DIES IN HELICOPTER CRASH

THE FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION IS INVESTIGATING A FATAL HELICOPTER CRASH THAT HAPPENED AROUND 9:30 SATURDAY MORNING IN WAYNE TOWNSHIP, MIFFLIN COUNTY. 62 YEAR OLD KENNETH SMITH OF MCVEYTOWN DIED WHEN THE 2-PASSENGER HELICOPTER WENT DOWN IN A FIELD NEAR ROUTE 522.

MISSING FOR 13 YEARS

THE ALTOONA MIRROR REPORTS THAT A LOCAL FAMILY HAS CREATED A FACEBOOK PAGE IN HOPES OF FINDING A WOMAN WHO WENT MISSING 13 YEARS AGO. SHERRY LEIGHTY WAS 21 AND LEFT 3 CHILDREN BEHIND WHEN SHE DISAPPEARED IN SEPTEMBER OF 1999. FRIENDS SAY SHE HAD TALKED ABOUT MOVING TO MAINE WITH A BOYFRIEND, SO THE POLICE DEPARTMENT DID NOT INVESTIGATE. SHE WAS LISTED IN A COMPUTER DATABASE SO POLICE WOULD BE NOTIFIED IF LAW ENFORCEMENT RAN ACROSS HER, BUT NO ALERTS HAVE BEEN RECEIVED. ALTOONA POLICE ARE REVIEWING THE CASE.

PSU FOOTBALL WEEKEND

PENN STATE DROPPED THE SEASON OPENER TO OHIO UNIVERSITY ON SATURDAY AND POLICE SAY THEY RESPONDED TO A NUMBER OF INCIDENTS IN THE BEAVER STADIUM PARKING LOT. POLICE MADE AT LEAST 8 UNDERAGE DRINKING ARRESTS AND CHARGED 3 PEOPLE WITH PUBLIC INTOXICATION. 2 PEOPLE ARE FACING ANIMAL CRUELTY CHARGES FOR LEAVING THEIR DOGS IN THEIR VEHICLES ON A DAY WHEN TEMPERATURES REACHED 87 DEGREES. STATE COLLEGE POLICE ALSO SAY ONE PERSON WAS ARRESTED FOR D-U-I, AND SEVERAL OTHERS WERE CITED FOR PUBLIC INTOXICATION DURING THE WEEKEND.T HEY MADE 12 UNDERAGE DRINKING BUSTS AND 5 FOR OPEN CONTAINER VIOLATIONS. ALL IN ALL, POLICE CALL IT A VERY NORMAL FOOTBALL WEEKEND.

SWINE FLU FOLLOWS ANOTHER FAIR

THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH HAS CONFIRMED 2 MORE CASES OF THE H-3-N-2-V FLU VIRUS AMONG CHILDREN WHO ATTENDED THE SOMERSET COUNTY FAIR LAST WEEK. ..BUT OFFICIALS SAY THERE IS NO EVIDENCE THAT THE NEW FLU CAN BE SPREAD FROM PERSON-TO-PERSON. THIS PARTICULAR STRAIN IS USUALLY ASSOCIATED WITH SWINE, BUT HANDLING OR EATING PORK PRODUCTS DOES NOT INCREASE THE RISK OF EXPOSURE.

FLIGHT 93 MEMORIAL

A CELEBRITY GOLF TOURNAMENT WILL BE HELD NEXT MONDAY TO RAISE FUNDS FOR THE COMPLETION OF THE FLIGHT 93 NATIONAL MEMORIAL IN SOMERSET COUNTY. LEGENDARY PITTSBURGH PIRATES CLOSER KENT TEKULVE LEADS THE LIST OF FORMER ATHLETES WHO WILL BE GOLFING ALONG WITH FORMER STEELERS TIGHT END RANDY GROSSMAN AND FORMER PENGUINS STAR PIERRE LAROUCHE.
