TIME FOR A SECOND JURY

ABOUT 650 BLAIR COUNTY RESIDENTS HAVE BEEN SUMMONED TO APPEAR MARCH 12TH FOR JURY SELECTION IN THE NICHOLAS HORNER TRIAL. THE IRAQ WAR VETERAN IS FACING THE DEATH PENALTY IF CONVICTED OF KILLING SCOTT GARLICK AT THE 58TH STREET SUBWAY RESTAURANT IN 2009…AND GUNNING DOWN RAYMOND WILLIAMS NEARBY. 12 JURORS AND 2 ALTERNATES WERE SELECTED LAST MONTH BEFORE THE PROCESS WAS HALTED BY THE STATE SUPREME COURT. THE JUDGES LATER DECIDED THE CASE COULD MOVE FORWARD AND THEY WOULD WAIT TO REVIEW A RULING BY JUDGE JOLENE KOPRIVA DISALLOWING AN INSANITY DEFENSE.

SANDUSKY SCANDAL

PENN STATE IS SUING PENNSYLVANIA MANUFACTURERS’ ASSOCIATION INSURANCE COMPANY WHICH HAS REFUSED TO PAY THE COSTS FOR A CIVIL LAWSUIT FILED BY A MAN WHO CLAIMS HE WAS MOLESTED BY JERRY SANDUSKY. THE SUIT ALSO NAMES THE SECOND MILE CHARITY. THE UNIVERSITY SAYS “PREMIUMS HAVE BEEN PAID FOR 50 YEARS, BUT PMA FAILED AND REFUSED TO PROVIDE COVERAGE.” PENN STATE PRESIDENT RODNEY ERICKSON HAS SAID THAT LEGAL COSTS WOULD BE COVERED BY INSURANCE AND NO MONEY FROM TUITION OR THE STATE WILL GO TOWARD PICKING UP THE COSTS FROM THE SCANDAL.

PATERNO REMEMBERED IN HARRISBURG

JOE PATERNO WAS HONORED ONCE AGAIN WEDNESDAY WITH A MEMORIAL MASS IN HARRISBURG, PRESIDED OVER BY THE BISHOP OF HARRISBURG, JOSEPH MCFADDEN. GOVERNOR TOM CORBETT ATTENDED ALONG WITH PATERNO’S FAMILY AND SOME FORMER FOOTBALL PLAYERS. PATERNO’S SON, SCOTT, SPOKE ON BEHALF OF THE FAMILY, SAYING HIS FATHER WAS NEVER BITTER AND HIS FATHER’S PASSING RESTORED HIS OWN FAITH. A FILM CELEBRATING PATERNO CALLED “THE JOE WE KNOW” PREMIERS SUNDAY AT 1 AND 4:30PM AT THE STATE THEATRE IN STATE COLLEGE. ADMISSION IS FREE AND TICKETS ARE AVAILABLE AT THE BOX OFFICE.

SWAT TEAM CALLED TO BOALSBURG

STATE COLLEGE POLICE CHIEF TOM KING SAYS A TACTICAL TEAM TRAINED FOR HIGH RISK SITUATIONS FIRED CHEMICALS INTO A HOUSE AT 104 WARNOCK ROAD NEAR BOALSBURG, CENTRE COUNTY, ABOUT 1:30 THIS MORNING. THEY WERE TRYING TO FORCE ANYONE INSIDE TO COME OUT, BUT LATER LEARNED NO ONE WAS IN THERE. THIS WAS ALL PART OF A SUSPECTED BURGLARY INVESTIGATION AND POLICE PLAN TO RELEASE MORE DETAILS LATER.

GOVERNOR IN JOHNSTOWN

GOVERNOR TOM CORBETT PLANS TO BE IN JOHNSTOWN THIS MORNING. AT 11AM, HE’LL TOUR LOCKHEED MARTIN AEROPARTS IN RICHLAND TOWNSHIP AND THEN DISCUSS HIS STATE BUDGET PROPOSAL UNVEILED LAST WEEK. THE TRIP TO JOHNSTOWN IS PART OF CORBETT’S CROSS-STATE “JOBS” TOUR.

RICK SANTORUM’S TAXES

REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE RICK SANTORUM IS GIVING VOTERS A CLOSE LOOK AT HIS PERSONAL WEALTH. THE FORMER PENNSYLVANIA SENATOR HAS RELEASED HIS TAX RETURNS FOR THE YEARS 2007 THROUGH 2010. OVER THOSE 4 YEARS, SANTORUM AND HIS WIFE KAREN PAID MORE THAN A MILLION DOLLARS IN FEDERAL TAXES.  

SCHOOLS MAY CLOSE

VOTES CAN’T BE TAKEN UNTIL AT LEAST MAY 16TH, BUT 2 LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICTS ARE CONSIDERING CLOSING ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS DUE TO DECLINING ENROLLMENT. ABOUT 150 PEOPLE ATTENDED A MEETING LAST NIGHT ABOUT ALLEGHENY ONE SCHOOL IN THE HOLLIDAYSBURG SCHOOL DISTRICT.
IF IT CLOSES, 163 STUDENTS WILL GO TO C.W. LONGER ELEMENTARY…AND THE OTHER 57 TO FOOT OF TEN. THE BEDFORD COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT ALSO HELD A MEETING TO TALK ABOUT SHUTTING DOWN HYNDMAN/LONDONDERRY ELEMENTARY.
