CONVICTED KILLER COMMITS SUICIDE IN PRISON

FORMER DUBOIS MATH TEACHER, 74-YEAR-OLD JON YOUNT WAS SERVING LIFE IN PRISON FOR THE 1966 RAPE AND STABBING DEATH OF DUBOIS HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR PAMELA SUE RIMER…AND NOW YOUNT HAS COMMITTED SUICIDE IN HIS STATE PRISON CELL IN GREENE COUNTY. BACK IN 1986, YOUNT WALKED AWAY FROM AN UN-SUPERVISED FARM DETAIL AT THE STATE PRISON AT ROCKVIEW, AND FLED TO IDAHO. HE WAS CAPTURED IN 1988 AFTER BEING FEATURED ON AN EPISODE OF TV’S “UNSOLVED MYSTERIES.”

ACCUSED KILLER BACK IN CAMBRIA COUNTY

AFTER HIS ARREST IN NEW JERSEY 2 MONTHS AGO, MURDER SUSPECT MARQUIS NEAL WAS ARRAIGNED IN JOHNSTOWN LAST NIGHT FOR THE OCTOBER 1ST SHOOTING DEATH OF J’QUAN LEWIS OUTSIDE THE OAKHURST HOMES. HE’S IN THE CAMBRIA COUNTY PRISON WITHOUT BOND. NEAL’S COUSIN, CO-DEFENDANT ANTHONY HARVEY, WAS ARRESTED A FEW MONTHS AGO IN PHILADELPHIA. HE HAS PLEADED NOT GUILTY TO ALL CHARGES AND THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY HAS SAID SHE WILL NOT SEEK THE DEATH PENALTY AGAINST HARVEY.

ARMED ROBBER ON THE LOOSE

JOHNSTOWN POLICE ARE STILL LOOKING FOR ONE OF THE 2 BLACK MEN WHO ROBBED DOMINO’S PIZZA IN MOXHAM AT GUNPOINT YESTERDAY MORNING.
AUTHORITIES CAUGHT 19 YEAR OLD JARRON BRIDGES OF PHILADELPHIA A SHORT TIME LATER AND HE IS IN THE CAMBRIA COUNTY PRISON 150-THOUSAND DOLLARS BAIL WITH A PRELIMINARY HEARING SET FOR MAY 10TH. THE OTHER MAN…KNOWN AS OMAR…IS CONSIDERED ARMED AND DANGEROUS.

SANDUSKY SCANDAL

SENIOR JUDGE JOHN CLELAND HAS DECIDED TO HOLD A HEARING WEDNESDAY TO DISCUSS FIINGS BY THE KEYSTONE CENTRAL AND MIFFLIN COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICTS AS WELL AS THE SECOND MILE. THEY ARE ASKING THE JUDGE TO QUASH SUBPOENAS FROM JERRY SANDUSKY’S DEFENSE ATTORNEY SEEKING INFORMATION INCLUDING STUDENT RECORDS, PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATIONS, GRADE REPORTS AND ATTENDANCE RECORDS. PROSECUTORS CALL THE SUBPOENAS A “FISHING EXPEDITION.”

VOTING ENDS AT 9AM TODAY FOR PENN STATE ALUMNI WHO WANT TO VOTE IN THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES ELECTION. 86 CANDIDATES ARE VYING FOR 3 OPEN SEATS AND MORE THAN 30-THOUSAND ALUMNI HAVE ALREADY VOTED. THE WINNERS WILL BE ANNOUNCED TOMORROW.

SINCE THE JERRY SANDUSKY SCANDAL BROKE IN NOVEMBER, PENN STATE HAS DONATED MORE THAN 1-POINT-3 MILLION DOLLARS TO ITS NEWLY-CREATED CENTER FOR THE PROTECTION OF CHILDREN BASED IN HERSHEY.THE CENTER WILL OFFER TREATMENT FOR ABUSED CHILDREN AND A PRIMARY CARE CLINIC FOR FOSTER KIDS. IN ADDITION, PENN STATE SENT 1-POINT-5 MILLION TO THE PENNSYLVANIA COALITION AGAINST RAPE BACK IN DECEMBER FROM ITS BIG TEN BOWL FUNDS.

CAMPUS RAPE INVESTIGATION

PENN STATE POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING A RAPE THAT REPORTEDLY HAPPENED SOMEWHERE ON CAMPUS BETWEEN APRIL 1ST AND THE 15TH. AUTHORITIES SAY A MAN SEXUALLY ASSAULTED A FEMALE STUDENT HE KNEW. POLICE DID NOT RELEASE ANY MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE SUSPECT.

ALTOONA DISTRESSED?

THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNITY AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IS SCHEDULED TO DECIDE TODAY WHETHER ALTOONA WILL BE ADMITTED INTO THE DISTRESSED MUNICIPALITIES PROGRAM. CITY OFFICIALS ARE EXPECTING A POSITIVE RESPONSE SINCE ALTOONA MEETS 3 QUALIFYING CRITERIA AND ONLY ONE IS NECESSARY.

BUDGET PICTURE IMPROVING

THE DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE IS OUT WITH ITS NEW MONTHLY REVENUE REPORT. APRIL’S GENERAL FUND COLLECTIONS TOPPED EXPECTATIONS BY 99-MILLION DOLLARS AND OFFICIALS CALL THIS A POSITIVE SIGN THAT THE STATE IS SLOWLY ON THE ROAD TO RECOVERY. THE I-F-O NOW PROJECTS A 300-MILLION DOLLAR STATE BUDGET SHORTFALL BY THE END OF THE FISCAL YEAR, A SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT OVER THE MORE THAN 700-MILLION DOLLAR BUDGET GAP THE GOVERNOR’S OFFICE PROJECTED IN FEBRUARY.
