SANDUSKY SCANDAL

IN AN EFFORT TO CONDUCT A “FAIR, IMPARTIAL, AND ORDERLY” TRIAL, JUDGE JOHN CLELAND YESTERDAY ISSUED AN ORDER FORBIDDING ATTORNEYS FOR JERRY SANDUSKY AND FOR THE STATE FROM DISCUSSING THE CASE WITH THE MEDIA. THE ORDER PROHIBITS LAWYERS FROM HOLDING PRESS CONFERENCES OR CONDUCTING INTERVIEWS ABOUT THE CASE AND THE UPCOMING TRIAL. JURY SELECTION IS SET TO BEGIN JUNE 5TH.

DAUPHIN COUNTY PRESIDENT JUDGE TODD HOOVER HAS SET A TIMELINE FOR THE PERJURY CASE AGAINST FORMER PENN STATE ADMINISTRATORS TIM CURLEY AND GARY SCHULTZ. THE MEN ARE EXPECTED BACK IN COURT JUNE 1ST FOR A PRE-TRIAL CONFERENCE AND THEY HAVE UNTIL JULY 30TH TO FILE ANY PRE-TRIAL MOTIONS. PROSECUTORS HAVE UNTIL AUGUST 14TH TO RESPOND, MAKING IT LIKELY THAT THE TRIAL WILL NOT START UNTIL FALL AT THE EARLIEST. CURLEY AND SCHULTZ ARE CHARGED WITH LYING TO A GRAND JURY INVESTIGATING ALLEGATIONS AGAINST JERRY SANDUSKY AND FAILING TO REPORT THE ALLEGED ABUSE.

VOTING BEGINS TODAY AND RUNS THROUGH 9AM MAY 3RD FOR 3 ALUMNI SEATS ON PENN STATE’S BOARD OF TRUSTEES. 86 CANDIDATES ARE RUNNING IN THE WAKE OF THE JERRY SANDUSKY SCANDAL. THE WINNERS WILL BE ANNOUNCED AT THE MAY 4TH BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETING.  MORE THAN 550-THOUSAND ALUMNI ARE ELIGIBLE TO CAST THEIR BALLOTS.

FOLLOWING A RECOMMENDATION FROM FORMER F-B-I CHIEF LOUIS FREEH WHO IS INVESTIGATING THE JERRY SANDUSKY SCANDAL, PENN STATE HAS HIRED A COMPLIANCE COORDINATOR TO OVERSEE MANDATORY CRIME REPORTING. GABRIEL GATES IS PRIMARILY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE UNIVERSITY’S ADHERENCE TO THE CLERY ACT, THE FEDERAL LAW REQUIRING SCHOOLS TO KEEP AND DISCLOSE INFORMATION ABOUT CRIMES OCCURRING ON THEIR CAMPUSES. PENN STATE SPOKESWOMAN LISA POWERS SAYS FREEH’S INVESTIGATION IS EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETED BY THE FALL.

ACCUSED PREDATOR DUE IN COURT

A PRELIMINARY HEARING IS SCHEDULED TODAY FOR 65 YEAR OLD LARRY MYERS OF HUNTINGDON WHO IS CHARGED WITH 145 CRIMINAL COUNTS FOR ALLEGEDLY HAVING SEX WITH 3 YOUNG BROTHERS BETWEEN 2004 AND 2008, STARTING WHEN THEY WERE AS YOUNG AS 11 YEARS OLD. MYERS HAS REPORTEDLY CONFESSED TO STATE TROOPERS AND HE’S JAILED ON 50-THOUSAND DOLLARS STRAIGHT CASH BAIL.

MURDER-FOR-HIRE TRIAL UNDERWAY

IN SOMERSET COUNTY COURT TODAY, IT’S DAY 2 OF THE MURDER FOR HIRE TRIAL OF CALVIN MALLORY OF BROOKLYN NEW YORK. THE LEAD INVESTIGATOR TESTIFIED YESTERDAY THAT MALLORY HIRED 3 MEN TO KILL BRYANT ADDERLY IN AUGUST 2009 BECAUSE MALLORY THOUGHT ADDERLY WAS STEALING DRUG PROFITS FROM HIM. ADDERLY WAS SHOT 22 TIMES INSIDE HIS BAKERSVILLE HOME. THE 3 HIRED GUNMEN PLEADED GUILTY TO 3RD DEGREE MURDER AND WILL BE SENTENCED IN MAY.

LONG JAIL SENTENCE IN ROADRAGE CASE

6-AND-A-HALF TO 13 YEARS IN PRISON IS THE SENTENCE FOR 41 YEAR OLD CHRISTOPHER RIGLER THE THIRD OF BLAIR COUNTY. ALTOONA POLICE SAY HE BROKE ANOTHER MAN’S JAW WITH A BASEBALL BAT DURING A ROAD RAGE INCIDENT LAST JUNE. RIGLER PLEADED GUILTY TO AGGRAVATED ASSAULT. POLICE SAY RIGLER HAS AN EXTENSIVE CRIMINAL HISTORY.

HOG-TYING GRANDMA

THE ALTOONA MIRROR REPORTS THAT 48 YEAR OLD EVELYN HIMES OF DUNCANSVILLE IS ACCUSED OF HOG-TYING HER 5 YEAR OLD GRANDSON WITH 3 SCARVES SO SHE COULD GO TO A METHADONE CLINIC LAST MONTH. HIMES DENIED THE ACCUSATION AND CLAIMS SHE HAS TIED THE BOY TO A CHAIR IN THE PAST TO PREVENT HIM FROM HARMING HIMSELF. THE BOY ALSO TOLD INVESTIGATORS THAT HIS GUARDIAN SMACKS HIM, THROWS HIM TO THE GROUND, AND PULLS HIS HAIR. HIMES’ PRELIMINARY HEARING IS APRIL 26TH. SHE IS FREE ON BOND.

TEEN DIES IN CRASH

GRIEF COUNSELORS WILL BE ON DUTY TODAY AT CONEMAUGH VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL. 16-YEAR OLD BRIAN ROLES JUNIOR WAS KILLED SUNDAY NIGHT WHEN HIS FATHER’S PICKUP CRASHED ALONG WILLIAM PENN HIGHWAY IN EAST TAYLOR TOWNSHIP. BRIAN ROLES SENIOR WAS DRIVING WITH A SUSPENDED LICENSE FOLLOWING A PREVIOUS D-U-I AND ANOTHER JUVENILE FAMILY MEMBER WAS ALSO IN THE VEHICLE. BRIAN JUNIOR WAS NOT WEARING A SEATBELT AND WAS EJECTED.

THE AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION PLANS A COURT CHALLENGE TO PENNSYLVANIA'S VOTER IDENTIFICATION LAW. STATE REPRESENTATIVES DWIGHT EVANS AND JOHN MYERS ARE HOLDING A PRESS CONFERENCE TODAY IN PHILADELPHIA TO INTRODUCE A BILL THAT WOULD REPEAL THE LAW. 
THE ACLU AND NAACP CALL IT DISCRIMINATORY, UNNECESSARY AND EXPENSIVE, AS IT CHARGES THE STATE WITH SUPPLYING PHOTO IDENTIFICATION FOR THOSE WITHOUT IT.
