SANDUSKY SCANDAL

A MAJOR VICTORY YESTERDAY FOR JERRY SANDUSKY. SENIOR JUDGE JOHN CLELAND RULED THAT HE CAN SEE 8 OF HIS 11 GRANDCHILDREN PROVIDED A PARENT IS IN ATTENDANCE. THIS RULING DOES NOT APPLY TO THE 3 OTHER GRANDKIDS WHO ARE INVOLVED IN A CUSTODY DISPUTE. THE JUDGE ALSO RULED THAT A CENTRE COUNTY JURY WILL HEAR THE CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE CASE, DENYING PROSECUTORS’ REQUEST TO BRING IN AN OUT-OF-COUNTY JURY. SANDUSKY CAN NOW LEAVE HIS HOME TO ASSIST HIS DEFENSE TEAM PROVIDED HE ALERTS CENTRE COUNTY PROBATION AT LEAST 36 HOURS AHEAD OF TIME AND PROVIDES A DETAILED ITINERARY. THE ATTORNEY GENERAL MUST PROVIDE THE DEFENSE WITH TIMES, DATES AND LOCATIONS RELATING TO EACH OF THE 52 CHARGES AGAINST SANDUSKY. PROSECUTORS ALSO NEED TO GIVE AGES OF EACH ACCUSER WHEN THE ALLEGED CRIME HAPPENED.

LEMONT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT OFFICIALS ARE TRYING TO REASSURE PARENTS AFTER A JUDGE AGREED TO LOOSEN JERRY SANDUSKY’S HOME CONFINEMENT RULES. THE SCHOOL HAS ENHANCED SECURITY BY KEEPING ALL EXTERIOR DOORS LOCKED, RESTRICTING TRAFFIC ONTO THE PROPERTY, AND INCREASING RECESS SUPERVISION EVER SINCE SANDUSKY’S ARREST IN NOVEMBER.

PENN STATE'S FORMER ATHLETIC DIRECTOR, TIM CURLEY, IS ASKING THE COURT OF COMMON PLEAS TO THROW OUT THE PERJURY CHARGE AGAINST HIM. COURT DOCUMENTS FILED IN DAUPHIN COUNTY SAY WITHOUT THE AVAILABILITY OF JOE PATERNO TO TESTIFY THERE ISN’T ENOUGH EVIDENCE TO ESTABLISH CORROBORATION. PATERNO HAD TESTIFIED BEFORE THE GRAND JURY INVESTIGATING THE JERRY SANDUSKY CHILD SEX ABUSE CHARGES, BUT THE DEFENSE NEVER HAD THE CHANCE TO CROSS-EXAMINE HIM. CURLEY AND FORMER PENN STATE ADMINISTRATOR GARY SCHULTZ ARE BOTH FACING CHARGES OF PERJURY AND FAILURE TO REPORT IN THE CASE.

AS OF THE END OF 2011, PENN STATE SPENT NEARLY 3-POINT-2 MILLION DOLLARS ON LEGAL FEES AND CRISIS COMMUNICATION STEMMING FROM THE JERRY SANDUSKY SCANDAL. THE INFORMATION WAS RELEASED ON A NEW WEBSITE, openness.psu.edu WHERE THE UNIVERSITY OUTLINES COSTS FOR LEGAL FEES, CONSULTANTS, AND PUBLIC RELATIONS. THE CENTRE DAILY TIMES REPORTS THAT THE 3-POINT-2 MILLION INCLUDES 2-AND-A-HALF MILLION FOR THE INVESTIGATION WHICH TRUSTEES HAVE HIRED FORMER FBI CHIEF LOUIS FREEH TO CONDUCT.

DRUG TESTING WELFARE RECIPIENTS

DRUG TESTING FOR CERTAIN WELFARE RECIPIENTS IS GETTING UNDER WAY IN PENNSYLVANIA AND THE FIRST PEOPLE TO BE TESTED ARE FELONY DRUG CONVICTS.
THE LAW SAYS ANYONE RECEIVING WELFARE WHO HAS A DRUG FELONY IN THE LAST 5 YEARS CAN BE RANDOMLY TESTED. IF THEY FAIL, THEY GO TO TREATMENT. IF THEY FAIL AGAIN, THEY LOSE THEIR WELFARE BENEFITS FOR A YEAR AND IF THEY FAIL A THIRD TIME, THEY CAN NEVER GET WELFARE AGAIN. SUPPORTERS SAY IT WILL CUT DOWN ON ABUSE, WASTE, AND FRAUD.
