SANDUSKY SCANDAL

THE STATE SUPREME COURT YESTERDAY REFUSED TO DELAY JERRY SANDUSKY'S TRIAL AND JURY SELECTION GETS STARTED THIS MORNING. LEGAL EXPERTS SAY THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE WILL BE TO FIND 12 JURORS AND 8 ALTERNATES WHO CAN BE IMPARTIAL ABOUT THE CASE. THE PROSECUTION PREVIOUSLY ASKED FOR AN OUT-OF-COUNTY JURY AND JUDGE JOHN CLELAND SAYS HE WILL CONSIDER THAT IF A JURY CANNOT BE SEATED FROM CENTRE COUNTY IN A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME. THE JUDGE ALSO RULED THAT SANDUSKY’S ACCUSERS WILL HAVE TO TESTIFY USING THEIR REAL NAMES…AND REPORTERS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO USE ELECTRONIC DEVICES DURING THE TRIAL.

BELLEFONTE BORO OFFICIALS SAY EXTRA SECURITY WILL BE ON HAND AT THE COURTHOUSE AND POLICE WILL TRY TO KEEP THINGS RUNNING SMOOTHLY DESPITE DOZENS OF HUGE MEDIA TRUCKS WHICH WILL TAKE OVER SOME STREETS. SOME COURTHOUSE SERVICES WILL MOVE ONTO THE PENN STATE CAMPUS NEXT WEEK.

PENN STATE HAS LAUNCHED A NEW WEBSITE AS PART OF ITS EFFORT TO IMPROVE COMMUNICATIONS FOLLOWING THE JERRY SANDUSKY SCANDAL. PRESIDENT RODNEY ERICKSON SAYS progress.psu.edu IS REPLACING THE PREVIOUS “OPENNESS” WEBSITE. IT INCLUDES INFORMATION SUCH AS THE STATUS OF THE INVESTIGATION BEING CONDUCTED BY FORMER FBI DIRECTOR LOUIS FREEH AND THE COST OF DAMAGE CONTROL WHICH HAS TOTALED 9-POINT-6 MILLION DOLLARS AS OF APRIL.

TRIPLE MURDER

INDIANA COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY PATRICK DOUGHERTY SAYS HE MAY SEEK THE DEATH PENALTY AGAINST 40 YEAR OLD LEWIS BEATTY OF HOME WHO ALLEGEDLY SLIT THE THROATS OF HIS 6 AND 11 YEAR OLD DAUGHTERS FRIDAY NIGHT…KILLED HIS ESTRANGED WIFE…THEN SET BOTH OF THEIR MOBILE HOMES ON FIRE. STATE POLICE SAY BEATTY ALSO SHOT THE FAMILY'S PET PONY, GOAT, AND DOG. A NEIGHBOR RESCUED BEATTY FROM THE FLAMES OF HIS HOME. HE IS NOW JAILED WITHOUT BOND.

JURY SEATED FOR ROBBERY TRIAL

A CENTRE COUNTY JURY WAS SEATED YESTERDAY FOR 3 RUSSIAN MEN ACCUSED OF BEING RESPONSIBLE FOR A CRIME WAVE IN 2009 AND 10.  MAKSIM ILLARIONOV, DMITRY LITVINOV, AND ANATOLIY VERETNOV ARE CHARGED WITH ROBBING DOZENS OF HOMES AND BUSINESSES. ILLARIONOV IS ALREADY SERVING 15 TO 30 YEARS FOR STEALING WEAPONS USED DURING THE ROBBERY SPREE. ALEXEI SEMIONOV WAS SENTENCED TO AT LEAST 36-YEARS IN JAIL FOR HIS ROLE IN THE CRIMES. TESTIMONY IS SET TO BEGIN JUNE 18TH.

MOM WILL GO ON TRIAL

STATE COLLEGE POLICE SAY 40 YEAR OLD JULIE DICK-CARSON OF HUNTINGDON COUNTY WAS HIGH ON AN INHALANT LAST SUMMER WHEN SHE CRASHED HER CAR INTO SPRING CREEK. HER 1 YEAR OLD SON SUFFERED A FRACTURED SKULL. A JURY WAS SEATED YESTERDAY AND DICK-CARSON WILL GO ON TRIAL SOON.

FORMER PENN STATE WRESTLER’S PLEA AGREEMENT

JUST BEFORE JURY SELECTION WAS TO BEGIN, FORMER PENN STATE WRESTLER ANDREW LONG AGREED TO PLEAD GUILTY TO ONE FELONY COUNTY OF AGGRAVATED INDECNET ASSAULT. LONG HAD ORIGINALLY BEEN CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTED RAPE FOR ASSAULTING A 55 YEAR OLD WOMAN, THE MOTHER OF ANOTHER STUDENT, LAST SUMMER. LONG WILL SERVE A SENTENCE OF ONE TO 2 YEARS IN THE CENTRE COUNTY PRISON. FORMAL SENTENCING IS SCHEDULED AUGUST 30TH.

ALTOONA’S ACT 47 COORDINATOR APPOINTED

THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNITY AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT YESTERDAY NAMED THE LAW FIRM OF STEVENS AND LEE TO BE ALTOONA’S ACT 47 COORDINATOR IN CHARGE OF DEVELOPING AND IMPLEMENTING A RECOVERY PLAN SINCE THE CITY JOINED THE STATE’S DISTRESSED MUNICIPALITIES PROGRAM. THE TEAM ALSO INCLUDES THE FIRMS OF D-S-I CIVIC AND FINANCIAL S&LUTIONS LLC. STEVENS AND LEE HAS 90 DAYS TO PROPOSE A RECOVERY PLAN, THEN A PUBLIC HEARING WILL BE SCHEDULED.

MARCELLUS SHALE GOOD FOR PENNSYLVANIA

PETROLEUM INDUSTRY EXPERTS SAY PENNSYLVANIA MAY BE SET TO DOMINATE NATURAL GAS PRODUCTION IN THE MARCELLUS SHALE REGION FOR MANY YEARS. WITH BILLIONS OF DOLLARS ALREADY INVESTED IN LEASES, WELLS AND RELATED INFRASTRUCTURE, THE STATE IS A COST-EFFECTIVE PLACE TO DO BUSINESS. SHELL OIL HAS ALSO CHOSEN WESTERN PA AS THE SITE FOR A HUGE NEW PETRO-CHEMICAL PLANT BECAUSE THAT REGION HAS MORE OF A TYPE OF GAS THAT CAN BE TURNED INTO INDUSTRIAL AND CONSUMER PRODUCTS, SUCH AS PLASTICS.
