PENELEC LOCKOUT CONTINUES

THE LOCKOUT OF PENELEC WORKERS CONTINUES AFTER NO PROGRESS WAS REPORTED IN YESTERDAY’S NEGOTIATIONS IN PITTSBURGH. ABOUT 140 WORKERS HAVE BEEN PICKETING OUTSIDE FIRST ENERGY HEADQUARTERS IN ALTOONA AND THE SURROUNDING AREA SINCE NOVEMBER 25TH.

HOUSE EXPLODES

STATE POLICE IN DUBOIS NOW SAY A PROPANE GAS LEAK IN THE BASEMENT OF A TREASURE LAKE HOME CAUSED THE EXPLOSION ON MONDAY. MICHAEL MYERS AND DEBORAH PRIDDY SUFFERED MINOR INJURIES AND THEIR DOG DID NOT MAKE IT. DAMAGE IS ESTIMATED AT A QUARTER MILLION DOLLARS.

BELLWOOD BLAZE

FIRE DAMAGED A HOME ON RIGGLES GAP ROAD IN ANTIS TOWNSHIP, BLAIR COUNTY, TUESDAY MORNING. OFFICIALS SAY THE PERSON WHO LIVED THERE WAS NOT HOME AT THE TIME. THE BLAZE APPEARS TO BE ACCIDENTAL AND THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES. DAMAGE IS ESTIMATED AT ABOUT 30-THOUSAND DOLLARS.

FORMER PUBLIC OFFICIAL FACING CHARGES

THE FORMER EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE JOHNSTOWN REDEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY HAS BEEN INDICTED ON FEDERAL CHARGES. WJAC REPORTS THAT RON REPAK IS ACCUSED OF EXTORTION AND BRIBERY AND COULD END UP BEHIND BARS FOR 90 YEARS. INVESTIGATORS SAID REPAK RECEIVED A NEW ROOF ON HIS HOME…HAD CONSTRUCTION DONE ON HIS SON'S BUSINESS…AND ACCEPTED SEVERAL STEELERS' TICKETS FROM CONTRACTORS, ALL VALUED AT MORE THAN 22-THOUSAND DOLLARS. REPAK HAS RECEIVED A SUMMONS TO APPEAR IN COURT NEXT WEEK.

DRUG KINGPIN’S WIFE FREED FROM JAIL

IN CAMBRIA COUNTY COURT YESTERDAY, 25 YEAR OLD ELIZABETH LOWMASTER OF NORTHERN CAMBRIA WAS SENTENCED TO 6 MONTHS TO 4 YEARS IN PRISON…THEN GIVEN CREDIT FOR TIME SERVED AND RELEASED FROM JAIL. SHE IS MARRIED TO GEORGE LOWMASTER OF CARROLLTOWN WHO HAS ADMITTED BEING THE KINGPIN OF A MULTIMILLION-DOLLAR DRUG RING. HIS PARENTS, GERALD AND MARGUERITE, HAVE ALSO PLEADED GUILTY TO BEING INVOLVED IN THE OPERATION. THEY ARE ALL AWAITING SENTENCING IN JOHNSTOWN’S FEDERAL COURT.

SEARCHING FOR LOCAL COUPLE

THE ALTOONA POLICE DEPARTMENT IS TRYING TO TRACK DOWN 32 YEAR OLD KEITH BAUGHMAN OF ALTOONA AND 34 YEAR OLD AMBER BRYANT OF TYRONE. THEY ARE WANTED OF DOZENS OF COUNTS OF CRIMINAL CONSPIRACY, INSURANCE FRAUD, ACQUIRING CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES BY FRAUD, FORGERY, DECEPTION, AND POSSESSION OF CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION IS ASKED TO CALL THE POLICE DEPARTMENT AT 949-2489.

BLAIR COUNTY REASSESSMENT

BLAIR COUNTY HASN’T DONE A PROPERTY REASSESSMENT SINCE THE 1950’S…AND NOW COMMISSIONERS WILL CONSIDER HIRING A CONSULTANT THIS YEAR AND POSSIBLY HIRE A COMPANY TO HANDLE THE REASSESSMENT, WHICH COULD COST UP TO 3 MILLION DOLLARS. OFFICIALS TELL THE ALTOONA MIRROR THAT, BASED ON BUDGET PROJECTIONS, A REASSESSMENT NEEDS TO BE DONE AND READY TO USE IN 2017.

SINGLE GAME TICKETS WILL BE AVAILABLE AS LOW AS 40-DOLLARS FOR SOME GAMES. OHIO STATE, WISCONSIN, AND IOWA ARE AMONG BIG 10 PROGRAMS ALREADY USING VARIABLE PRICING.
