TEACHER SUSPENDED

THE HARMONY SCHOOL DISTRICT IN CLEARFIELD COUNTY HAS SUSPENDED MUSIC TEACHER SHANE PUTOREK FOLLOWING HIS ARREST LAST WEEK. PATTON BORO POLICE SAY THE 27 YEAR OLD PUTOREK RAPED A 15-YEAR-OLD BOY MAY 8TH WHEN THE TEEN SPENT THE NIGHT AT HIS APARTMENT. PUTOREK…WHO IS FREE ON BOND…IS ALSO ACCUSED OF SLIPPING A CELLPHONE UNDER THE BATHROOM DOOR AND TRYING TO TAKE PICTURES OF THE BOY AS HE SHOWERED. THE SCHOOL DISTRICT SAYS COUNSELORS ARE AVAILABLE FOR STUDENTS.

SANDUSKY SCANDAL

RON TOMALIS IS PENNSYLVANIA’S SECRETARY OF EDUCATION AND A MEMBER OF PENN STATE’S BOARD OF TRUSTEES. SPEAKING IN STATE COLLEGE YESTERDAY, HE SAID THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES WILL WAIT UNTIL THE INTERNAL INVESTIGATION IS COMPLETE BEFORE DECIDING WHETHER TO APOLOGIZE TO THE PATERNO FAMILY FOR HOW THE UNIVERSITY HANDLED JOE PATERNO’S FIRING. TOMALIS AND MERCK CEO KEN FRAZIER ARE CO-CHAIRMEN OF FORMER FBI DIRECTOR LOUIS FREEH’S INVESTIGATION INTO THE JERRY SANDUSKY SCANDAL AND SO FAR THE TEAM HAS CONDUCTED MORE THAN 400 INTERVIEWS. TOMALIS SAYS THE WORK IS ON SCHEDULE AND THEY EXPECT TO RECEIVE RECOMMENDATIONS IN THE NEAR FUTURE. ENN STATE HAS ALREADY SPENT MORE THAN 7-AND-A-HALF MILLION DOLLARS ON DAMAGE CONTROL.

THE PROSECUTION IN THE JERRY SANDUSKY CASE WANTS TO KNOW IF HIS DEFENSE TEAM PLANS TO USE AN EXPERT WITNESSS AT HIS TRIAL. THEY ALSO WANT TO REVIEW ANY PHYSICAL OR MENTAL EVALUATIONS, SCIENTIFIC TESTS, OR EXPERIMENTS THAT SANDUSKY’S ATTORNEY PLANS TO SHOW THE JURY.
THE REQUEST WAS MADE YESTERDAY AS PART OF A PRE-TRIAL MOTION FOR DISCOVERY. ANDUSKY’S TRIAL IS SET TO BEGIN JUNE 5TH ALTHOUGH JOE AMENDOLA HAS ASKED FOR A DELAY. THE JUDGE HAS NOT YET RULED ON THAT MOTION.

WRECKS

62 YEAR-OLD SANDRA SYKES OF YORK WAS TAKEN TO MOUNT NITTANY MEDICAL CENTER WITH MODERATE INJURIES TUESDAY AFTERNOON, AFTER SHE FELL ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL AND HER CAR COLLIDED WITH A TRACTOR-TRAILER ON INTERSTATE 80 IN SNOW SHOE TOWNSHIP, CENTRE COUNTY. STATE POLICE SAY SYKES’ VEHICLE THEN SPUN INTO THE MEDIAN AND HIT AN EMBANKMENT. SHE WAS CITED FOR CARELESS DRIVING. THE TRUCKDRIVER WAS NOT HURT.

STATE POLICE IN BLAIR COUNTY SAY NUMEROUS TRAFFIC CITATIONS WILL BE FILED AGAINST 25 YEAR OLD MATTHEW MALLORY OF TYRONE FOLLOWING A CRASH MONDAY NIGHT ON GRANDVIEW ROAD IN ANTIS TOWNSHIP. MALLORY WAS SOUTHBOUND WHEN HE FAILED TO NEGOTIATE A CURVE AND SLAMMED INTO A NORTHBOUND VEHICLE DRIVEN BY DENISE BUTTERBAUGH OF BLANDBURG. A 12 YEAR OLD PASSENGER IN HER CAR HAD A BROKEN ARM AND BUTTERBAUGH SUFFERED A LEG INJURY. MALLORY WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL WITH A BROKEN NOSE AND CONCUSSION.

20 YEAR OLD ALICIA SPIDLE OF DUNCANSVILLE SUFFERED MAJOR INJURIES IN A CRASH YESTERDAY MORNING. STATE POLICE SAY SPIDLE WAS NORTHBOUND ON I-99 IN LOGAN TOWNSHIP WHEN HER CAR STRUCK THE GUIDERAIL. SHE WAS TAKEN TO ALTOONA REGIONAL HEALTH SYSTEM AND THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES.

BANK EMBEZZLEMENT

THE U-S ATTORNEY’S OFFICE FOR THE MIDDLE DISTRICT OF PENNSYVLANIA SAYS 40 YEAR OLD KIMBERLY LAIRD OF MILESBURG WILL PLEAD GUILTY TO EMBEZZLING OVER 78-THOUSAND DOLLARS  WHILE SHE WAS THE MANAGER OF THE BELLEFONTE BRANCH OF PNC BANK BETWEEN JANUARY OF 2005 AND NOVEMBER OF LAST YEAR. LAIRD ADMITTED OPENING CREDIT CARDS IN HER FATHER’S NAME WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION…MAKING REDEMPTIONS FROM CERTIFICATES OF DEPOSIT ACCOUNTS OF 5 CUSTOMERS…AND OPENING CHECKING ACCOUNTS IN OTHER NAMES. LAIRD COULD FACE A MAXIMUM OF 10 YEARS IN PRISON PLUS, A FINE OF UP TO 250-THOUSAND DOLLARS.

WILL SCHOOL CLOSE ITS DOORS?

THE HOLLIDAYSBURG AREA SCHOOL BOARD WILL DISCUSS A PROPOSED 2-POINT-1 MILL TAX HIKE AT TONIGHT’S MEETING. THE INCREASE WOULD COST THE AVERAGE TAXPAYER AN EXTRA 2-DOLLARS-44 CENTS PER MONTH. THEY ARE ALSO TALKING ABOUT POSSIBLY SHUTTING DOWN ALLEGHENY ONE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WHICH WOULD REDUCE THE DEFICIT BY 690-THOUSAND DOLLARS. IN ORDER TO STAY OPEN, THE BUILDING NEEDS 3-POINT-2 MILLION DOLLARS IN RENOVATIONS. THE DISTRICT IS STILL WAITING TO HEAR HOW MUCH STATE FUNDING IT WILL RECEIVE.

ICE CREAM PROBLEM

THE CENTRE DAILY TIMES REPORTS THAT THE STATE DEPARTMENTS OF AGRICULTURE AND HEALTH ISSUED AN ADVISORY YESTERDAY URGING CONSUMERS TO DISCARD ANY ICE CREAM BOUGHT MAY 5TH AT DUTCH VALLEY BAKERY NEAR REBERSBURG. OFFICIALS SAY THE SPRING BANK ACRES DAIRY FARM PRODUCED A BATCH OF ICE CREAM MIX AND RAW MILK WAS ADDED AFTER PASTEURIZATION, POSING A POTENTIAL FOOD SAFETY RISK. SELLING RAW, UNPASTEURIZED MILK IN PENNSYLVANIA IS LEGAL WITH A PERMIT, BUT THE SALE OF RAW MILK ICE CREAM IS AGAINST THE LAW. AUTHORITIES THINK IT WAS JUST AN OVERSIGHT AND NEITHER THE FARM NOR THE BAKERY CURRENTLY FACES PENALTIES.

AG SECRETARY AT PSU

U-S AGRICULTURE SECRETARY TOM VILSACK WILL VISIT PENN STATE TODAY. HE WILL DELIVER AN ADDRESS TO COMMEMORATE THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE U-S-D-A AND HIGHLIGHT THE GROUND-BREAKING RESEARCH AND INNOVATION THAT TAKES PLACE AT LAND-GRANT UNIVERSITIES. VILSACK WILL SPEAK AT 11AM IN THE BERG AUDITORIUM IN THE LIFE SCIENCES BUILDING.

HAUNTED TAVERN?

FILM CREWS FROM THE BIOGRAPHY CHANNEL WERE IN BEDFORD THIS WEEK, SHOOTING FOOTAGE OF THE BEDFORD TAVERN. IT WILL BE FEATURED THIS FALL ON A PROGRAM CALLED “MY GHOST STORY.” SOME EMPLOYEES AND VISITORS CLAIM THE RESTAURANT IS HAUNTED. IT DATES BACK TO THE 1820’S AND PREVISOULY SERVED AS EVERYTHING FROM A PHARMACY TO A LIQUOR STORE. THE EPISODE IS EXPECTED TO AIR IN THE FALL.
