SANDUSKY SCANDAL

JERRY SANDUSKY AND HIS ATTORNEY APPEARED AT AN UN-ANNOUNCED 3-HOUR HEARING YESTERDAY AT THE CENTRE COUNTY COURTHOUSE. LAWYERS FOR SEVERAL ALLEGED VICTIMS FILED MOTIONS ASKING THE COURT TO PROTECT THEIR IDENTITIES. THE FORMER COACH IS NOT PLANNING TO ATTEND TODAY’S COURT CONFERENCE. JUDGE JOHN CLELAND WILL DEAL WITH ANY UNRESOLVED PRE-TRIAL ISSUES BEFORE JURY SELECTION BEGINS TUESDAY.

WRIGHT CANNOT FIRE HIS ATTORNEYS

THE ALTOONA MIRROR REPORTS THAT BLAIR COUNTY JUDGE HIRAM CARPENTER HAS RULED THAT DEATH ROW INMATE WILLIAM WRIGHT OF ALTOONA IS NOT COMPETENT TO FIRE HIS ATTORNEYS AND WITHDRAW HIS APPEALS. HIS APPEALS WILL NOW BE HANDLED BY THE FEDERAL PUBLIC DEFENDER IN PITTSBURGH AND THE ANTI-DEATH PENALTY ORGANIZATION, THE DEFENDERS ASSOCIATION OF PHILADELPHIA. WRIGHT WAS SENTENCED TO DIE FOR THE 1998 SHOOTING DEATH OF JAMES MOWRY. A STATUS CONFERENCE IS SCHEDULED JULY 3RD TO DETERMINE THE NEXT STEP.

ANIMAL CRUELTY CHARGES FILED

ANGELA BARTELS AND JESSE SHAY OF SOMERSET ARE INVOLVED IN AT LEAST 4 DIFFERENT ANIMAL CRUELTY CASES AND POLICE SAY THEY HAVE NOW BEEN OFFICIALLY CHARGED WITH AT LEAST 20 OFFENSES. NEIGHBORS COMPLAINED ABOUT SICK DOGS IN THE BACK YARD AND A VET DETERMINED THE ANIMALS WERE SEVERELY INFECTED WITH THE PARVO VIRUS. 2 HAD TO BE PUT DOWN ALONG WITH SEVERAL CATS. DEAD PUPPIES WERE ALSO FOUND IN A DUMPSTER.
BACK IN JANUARY, ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICERS REMOVED A HALF-DOZEN HORSES FROM THE COUPLE’S PROPERTY IN MEYERSDALE.

TEEN SHOOTER

JOHNSTOWN POLICE SAY 15 YEAR OLD ISAIAH WAULK IS CHARGED AS ADULT WITH FIRING SHOTS LAST FRIDAY IN THE HORNERSTOWN NEIGHBORHOOD AFTER HE BROKE INTO A CAR AND WAS CONFRONTED BY THE OWNER. POLICE TRACKED DOWN WAULK, BUT ARE STILL LOOKING FOR THE GUN THAT WAS USED. BAIL IS SET AT A 500-THOUSAND DOLLARS.

FLASHER’S TRIAL UNDERWAY

SEVERAL WOMEN…INCLUDING PENN STATE STUDENTS…TESTIFIED YESTERDAY THAT RYAN HO ENTERED THEIR HOMES, APARTMENTS, OR DORM ROOMS AND EXPOSED AND GROPED HIMSELF. THE PATTON TOWNSHIP MAN IS ACCUSED OF ACCOSTING 20 WOMEN STARTING IN AUGUST 2009…AND ASSAULTING SOME OF THEM. HE WAS FINALLY ARRESTED IN MAY OF LAST YEAR. SOME OF THE INCIDENTS OCCURRED IN PENN STATE LOUNGES AND LAUNDRY AREAS. HO’S TRIAL IS EXPECTED TO WRAP UP FRIDAY.
 
VANDALS RUIN SUMMER FUN

THE SOLDIERS AND SAILORS MEMORIAL PARK POOL IN MILLHEIM, CENTRE COUNTY, WAS NOT ABLE TO OPEN MEMORIAL DAY AFTER VANDALS LEFT BROKEN GLASS IN AND AROUND THE POOL. STATE POLICE AT ROCKVIEW THINK VANDALS BROKE INTO THE FACILITY BETWEEN 7:30 SATURDAY EVENING AND 7:30 SUNDAY MORNING. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION IS ASKED TO CALL TROOPERS AT 355-75-45.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND FATALITIES

AT LEAST 13 PEOPLE DIED AND 311 WERE INJURED IN 817 CRASHES INVESTIGATED BY STATE POLICE OVER THE 4-DAY MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND. STATE POLICE COMMISSIONER FRANK NOONAN SAYS 66 OF THOSE CRASHES, INCLUDING 3 FATALITES WERE ALCOHOL-RELATED. 9 OF THOSE KILLED WERE NOT WEARING SEAT BELTS. TROOPERS ALSO ISSUED 92-HUNDRED-2 SPEEDING CITATIONS AND ARRESTED 404 PEOPLE FOR DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE. DURING LAST YEAR’S HOLIDAY DRIVING PERIOD, 13 PEOPLE DIED AND 294 WERE INJURED IN 808 WRECKS.

A CASH 5 PENNSYLVANIA LOTTERY TICKET FOR MONDAY’S DRAWING IS WORTH NEARLY 1-POINT-3 MILLION DOLLARS AND IT WAS SOLD AT THE 25TH AVENUE SHEETZ IN ALTOONA. THE STORE WILL RECEIVE A 10-THOUSAND DOLLAR BONUS FOR SELLING THE WINNING TICKET. LOTTERY OFFICIALS HAVE NOT IDENTIFIED THE WINNER.

MORE NASTY THUNDERSTORMS ROLLED THROUGH THE AREA YESTERDAY, DOWNING SOME TREES AND POWER LINES IN BLAIR, CAMBRIA, HUNTINGDON, AND CENTRE COUNTIES. WHEN THE SAME SYSTEM MOVED THROUGH THE CLEVELAND AREA, IT DROPPED GOLF-BALL SIZED HAIL, BUT WE DID NOT GET THAT.
