SANDUSKY SENTENCING

JERRY SANDUKSY IS EXPECTED TO SPEND THE REST OF HIS LIFE IN A STATE PRISON AFTER BEING SENTENCED TO 30 TO 60 YEARS YESTERDAY. THE YOUNG MAN KNOWN AS VICTIM 4 TOLD THE COURT HIS ONLY REGRET IS THAT HE DIDN’T COME FORWARD SOONER. HE TOLD SANDUSKY – QUOTE – “WHILE I DON’T FORGIVE YOU, I ASK OTHERS WHO WERE ABUSED TO FORGIVE ME FOR NOT COMING FORWARD SOONER.” VICTIM 5 SAID “THE SENTENCE WILL NEVER ERASE IMAGES OF HIS FILTHY NAKED BODY UP AGAINST ME. IT IS REAL AND IT IS PAINFUL AND IT WILL BE INSIDE ME FOREVER.” AND VICTIM 6 SAYS HE WAS LEFT WITH “DEEP PAINFUL WOUNDS WORDS CAN SIMPLY NOT DEFINE.” SANDUSKY SPOKE FOR ABOUT 15 MINUTES AND SAID “I AM TALKING NOT OUT OF ARROGANCE BUT FROM MY HEART. I AM NOT A MONSTER THAT THEY PORTRAY ME TO BE. I DID NOT DO THESE ALLEGED DISGUSTING ACTS. I WANTED TO HELP KIDS.”

PROSECUTOR JOE MCGETTIGAN CALLED SANDUSKY’S STATEMENT A MASTERPIECE OF DENIAL. HE SAYS “IT WAS ENTIRELY SELF-FOCUSED, AS IF HE AGAIN WAS THE VICTIM. IT WAS, IN SHORT, RIDICULOUS. JUDGE JOHN CLELAND DESIGNATED SANDUSKY AS A SEXUALLY VIOLENT OFFENDER.

PENN STATE PRESIDENT RODNEY ERICKSON ISSUED A STATEMENT AFTER SANDUSKY WAS SENTENCED AND SAID –QUOTE -- "OUR THOUGHTS TODAY AS THEY HAVE BEEN FOR THE LAST YEAR, GO OUT TO THE VICTIMS OF JERRY SANDUSKY'S ABUSE.  WHILE TODAY'S SENTENCE CANNOT ERASE WHAT HAS HAPPENED, HOPEFULLY IT WILL PROVIDE COMFORT TO THOSE AFFECTED BY THESE HORRIBLE EVENTS AND HELP THEM CONTINUE DOWN THE ROAD TO RECOVERY".

GOVERNOR TOM CORBETT SAYS HE HOPES SANDUSKY’S LONG PRISON SENTENCE IS A JUST REWARD FOR HIS VICTIMS’ TRUST IN THE JUSTICE SYSTEM. CORBETT, WHO WAS THE STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL WHEN THE INVESTIGATION WAS LAUNCHED IN 2009, SAYS THE VICTIMS’ TESTIMONY AND PROSECUTORS’ HARD WORK RESULTED IN AN “AIRTIGHT” CASE AGAINST SANDUSKY.

STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL LINDA KELLY ISSUED A STATEMENT FOLLOWING THE SANDUSKY SENTENCING SAYING: “ TODAY, JUSTICE WAS SERVED.” SHE SAYS THE SENTENCE IS APPROPRIATE AND REFLECTS THE SERIOUSNESS OF HIS CRIMES, THE IRREPARABLE HARM HE HAS CAUSED TO SO MANY AND THE NEED TO REMOVE HIM FROM SOCIETY FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE. KELLY ALSO URGED ANYONE WHO SUSPECTS THAT A CHILD IS BEING ABUSED TO COME FORWARD TO AUTHORITIES.
