9/11 HEROES REMEMBERED

MANY MORE PEOPLE TURNED OUT FOR THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF 9/11, BUT ABOUT 1-THOUSAND WERE AT THE FLIGHT 93 NATIONAL MEMORIAL YESTERDAY TO MARK THE 11TH ANNIVERSARY. VICE PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN, WHO LOST HIS WIFE AND DAUGHTER IN A 1972 CAR ACCIDENT, TOLD FAMILIES HE UNDERSTANDS THEIR GRIEF, BUT OFFERED HOPE FOR RECOVERY AND SAID FAMILIES OF THE FLIGHT 93 HEROES CAN SEE HOW THEIR LIVES HAVE MADE A DIFFERENCE.

INTERIOR SECRETARY KEN SALAZAR VISITED THE FLIGHT 93 NATIONAL MEMORIAL YESTERDAY TO MARK THE 11TH ANNIVERSARY OF 9/11 AND HE SAYS LEADERS ARE COMMITTED TO COMPLETING THE PROJECT, BEGINNING WITH THE VISITOR’S CENTER. KING LAUGHLIN, VICE PRESIDENT OF THE FLIGHT 93 NATIONAL CAMPAIGN, SAYS ALL OF THE FUNDING IS IN PLACE FOR THE VISITOR CENTER, WALKWAY AND PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE, AND FEATURE WALLS…AND CONSTRUCTION SHOULD BEGIN IN THE SPRING. IT WILL TAKE ANOTHER 5 MILLION DOLLARS IN PRIVATE FUNDRAISING TO ADD A LEARNING CENTER AND A TOWER OF VOICES PROPOSED NEAR THE MEMORIAL’S ENTRANCE ROADWAY.

GREATER JOHNSTOWN HIGH SCHOOL AND INDIANA UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA GRADUATE WILLIAM MOSKAL DIED ON SEPTEMBER 11TH 2001 WHEN PLANES CRASHED INTO THE WORLD TRADE CENTER…AND NOW JOHNSTOWN’S WEST END IMPROVEMENT GROUP IS BUILDING A MEMORIAL IN HIS NAME AT THE CORNER OF FAIRFIELD AVENUE AND D STREET. OFFICIALS HOPE TO HAVE THE SITE COMPLETED IN A FEW MONTHS.

PREACHER WILL STAND TRIAL

A BEDFORD JURY WAS SELECTED TUESDAY TO HEAR THE SEXUAL ASSAULT TRIAL OF TRAVELING EVANGELIST WALTER BRADSHAW OF NORTH CAROLINA WHO IS ACCUSED OF HAVING SEX WITH AN 11-YEAR-OLD GIRL AT A BEDFORD TOWNSHIP MOTEL. REVEREND BRADSHAW IS SCHEDULED TO GO ON TRIAL NEXT WEDNESDAY. AUTHORITIES SAY HE WAS HOLDING REVIVAL SERVICES IN BEDFORD COUNTY IN 2009 WHEN HE ARRANGED FOR AN ALUM BANK WOMAN TO BRING HER DAUGHTER TO THE JANEY LYNN MOTEL. THE MOTHER PLEADED NO CONTEST TO REDUCED CHARGES AND WAS SENTENCED TO 2 TO 5 YEARS IN PRISON.

BUSTED FOR D-U-I 9 TIMES

RUSSIAN NATIVE YEVGENIY YEFAIMOV IS FACING HIS 9TH D-U-I CHARGE AFTER BEING ARRESTED BY TYRONE POLICE LAST WEEK. HE IS ACCUSED OF ALMOST HITTING A CHILD AND ANOTHER VEHICLE IN THE TYRONE SHEETZ PARKING LOT. THE ALTOONA MIRROR REPORTS THAT THE 28 YEAR OLD YEFAIMOV HAS A CRIMINAL HISTORY IN AT LEAST 10 STATES. HE ALLEGEDLY USED A FALSE NAME WHEN POLICE BUSTED HIM. OVER THE YEARS, YEFAIMOV HAS USED 7 DIFFERENT ALIASES WITH 7 DIFFERENT BIRTH DATES.
BAIL IS SET AT 35-THOUSAND DOLLARS CASH.

LAWMAKERS DISCUSS PENALTIES FOR ALCOHOL OFFENSES

A PUBLIC HEARING IS SCHEDULED IN STATE COLLEGE TODAY AS LAWMAKERS CONSIDER STIFFER PENALTIES FOR PUBLIC DRUNKENNESS. THE STATE SENATE ALREADY HAS PASSED AND THE HOUSE IS CONSIDERING 2 BILLS…ONE TO INCREASE THE FINE FOR PUBLIC DRUNKENNESS FROM 300 TO 1-THOUSAND DOLLARS…AND THE OTHER TO LET COLLEGE TOWNS LEVY A 100 DOLLAR FEE ON PEOPLE CONVICTED OF ALCOHOL-RELATED OFFENSES. THE HOUSE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE’S HEARING IS FROM 10 TO NOON IN THE STATE COLLEGE BORO BUILDING.

NURSE DUE IN COURT

A FORMER ALTOONA REGIONAL HEALTH SYSTEM REGISTERED NURSE IS DUE IN COURT TODAY. 38 YEAR OLD ANGELA PACKER OF ALVERDA, INDIANA COUNTY, IS CHARGED WITH FILLING VIALS WITH SALINE, THEN STEALING THE PAINKILLERS. AUTHORITIES SAY SHE ALSO TAMPERED WITH THE COMPUTER SYSTEM TO COVER UP THE THEFT.

RE-DISTRICTING CHALLENGE

ARCHITECTS OF PENNSYLVANIA’S LATEST LEGISLATIVE RE-DISTRICTING PLAN FACE MORE THAN A DOZEN CHALLENGERS, INCLUDING DEMOCRATS IN THE STATE SENATE, AS THEY TRY TO CONVINCE THE STATE SUPREME COURT THAT THE NEW MAPS COMPLY WITH CONSTITUTIONAL REQUIREMENTS. TODAY’S NATIONAL AVERAGE IS $3.84. THERE IS RELIEF IN SIGHT. INDUSTRY EXPERTS SAY REFINERS WILL SOON SWITCH TO SELLING WINTER BLENDS OF GAS WHICH ARE CHEAPER THAN SUMMER BLENDS FORMULATED TO REDUCE POLLUTION.

THE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION SAYS A 3RD SPRAYING FOR WEST NILE VIRUS IS SCHEDULED THIS EVENING IN RESIDENTIAL AND RECREATIONAL AREAS IN ALTOONA, HOLLIDAYSBURG …AND IN BLAIR, LOGAN, AND FRANKSTOWN TOWNSHIPS. 92 MOSQUITO SAMPLES HAVE TESTED POSITIVE SO FAR THIS YEAR IN BLAIR COUNTY, BUT NO HUMAN CASES HAVE BEEN REPORTED. ONE HUMAN DEATH WAS CONFIRMED…AN ELDERLY MAN IN LUZERNE COUNTY.
