Opening night gave both Altoona High basketball teams a taste of some of the top competition in the WPIAL. The Lady Lions lost to perennial power Mt. Lebanon, 59-49. That was the varsity opener in the Wright Automotive North Allegheny Tip-Off Tournament. The game started at a slow pace, tied at the end of one, 6-6. Both teams came alive in the second, the Lady Blue Devils led, 23-21 at half time.
Mt. Lebanon raced out to a ten point lead in the 3rd quarter. Margie McCaffrey led the Lebo effort with 23 points, including 8 straight free throws to ice the game down the stretch.
Hartford bound Darby Lee was held to 4 points. That total was a combination of a very tall front line for Mt. Lebanon and Lee's foul trouble throughout.
Altoona will play Chartiers Valley at noon today. The Lady Colts beat Mt. Lebanon twice in the post season a year ago, but they were handled by North Allegheny last night. The game will be on wfbg.com. You'll see the link on this page.
The Mountain Lions were pounded by highly ranked Gateway last night in the Peters Twp. tournament, 74-48. Manny Span scored 20 points. They take on the hosts at 1:30 today.
